CDC Report: Masking Reduces Your Risk of Testing Positive
We know it's been found in laboratory settings that masking reduces the risk for transmission of the virus which causes COVID-19, but what about in the “real-world”? The CDC recently published a study of California residents which answers that question.
Over 3,000 participants were involved in the study, across nine multi-county regions, and included those who had received a test result between February 18 to December 1, 2021. Those participants enrolled over the three-month period from September 9 – December 1 were asked to self-report their use of a facemask or respirator in indoor public settings for the 14 days prior to their SARS-Cov-2 testing. As shown on the diagram below, respirators were shown to be the most protective, followed by surgical masks.
Although the California Department of Public Health’s indoor masking mandate has lifted, masks are still required in certain settings. Marin County Public Health strongly recommends the continued use of masking in indoor spaces while we remain in “substantial transmission” status according to the CDC.
For more information, or to read the study in its entirety, visit the CDC website.
Think Positive, Test Negative
You probably know this by now, but if you’re experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, you should get tested as soon as possible, even if you’re fully vaccinated. By finding out if you’re positive, you help others test negative.
Alternatively, are you a close contact of someone who is COVID positive? Slow the spread by following Isolation and Quarantine guidance and getting a COVID-19 test 5 days after your exposure. Testing is a valuable resource to help limit the spread of the virus in our community and protect the ones you love.
FREE COVID-19 testing is offered in partnership with Optum Serve and Curative. Click the links below to check appointment availability or visit our Testing webpage to find additional testing options.
