What You Need to Know About the New COVID-19 Vaccine Recommendations

With summer travel, events, and family gatherings on the way, it's a good time to think about your health. You may have heard that the government recently updated its COVID-19 vaccine guidance. If you're feeling unsure, you're not alone. Here’s what matters: vaccine recommendations are based on years of careful research and expert review. The COVID-19 vaccine has been shown to protect people 6 months and older, including pregnant people and young children. It helps prevent serious illness, hospital stays, and health problems during pregnancy or early infancy. If you have questions, talk to your health care provider. Getting the 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine now is a strong step toward protecting yourself and those around you, especially before a summer surge in Covid activity.  Find a vaccine near you with Marin County Public Health’s Vaccine Finder

Check Your Child’s Vaccine Records Before Summer Travel

Recent large measles exposure events in Santa Clara and Alameda counties, at the Mall of America in Minnesota, and during a Shakira concert in New Jersey are reminders that measles is still a serious risk. Measles spreads very easily, especially in crowded places like airports, malls, and public events. With summer travel coming up, it’s important to check your child’s vaccine records. Children usually get their first measles (MMR) shot at 12 months, but if your child is traveling, especially through domestic or international airports or to areas with outbreak, they should get the vaccine as early as 6 months. Getting the measles vaccine early protects your child and helps stop the spread to others, including babies and people who can’t get vaccinated. Review your vaccine records today and keep your family safe and your vacation on track. Learn more at Marin County Public Health’s website Information on Measles

Celebrating Pride and a New Beginning for Marin’s LGBTQ+ Community

This Pride Month, Marin County is celebrating the opening of a new home for the LGBTQ+ community. The Marin LGBTQ+ Center has officially opened its doors at 709 Fifth Ave. in San Rafael, inside the Multicultural Center of Marin. The new center fills a gap left by the Spahr Center, which closed in early 2024 due to financial challenges. The center, created with the support of longtime activist Reverend Jane Spahr, is run entirely by volunteers and is already making an impact. Its first program, QNest, brings together LGBTQ+ youth ages 13 to 25 for support, creativity, and connection every month. The center is focused on listening to and supporting transgender youth and their families. It’s a place where everyone can feel safe, valued, and affirmed. This Pride Month, we celebrate not just identity—but the power of community and resilience.

Preventing Firearm Tragedies Starts at Home

Every year, our community suffers heartbreaking losses from gun violence—many of them are preventable. In April, we lost Zion Greenwood, a bright, kind, and driven Class of 2024 Tam High and Bridging the Gap graduate, climate advocate with Marin City Climate Resilience and Health Justice and student at Santa Rosa Junior College. His big dreams, strong spirit, and deep commitment to his community left a lasting impact and his loss is deeply felt. One of the most effective ways to prevent gun-related tragedies is by storing firearms locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition. A small step can save a life. Let’s honor Zion’s memory by protecting our loved ones and building a safer community—together.

Join Us for the Community Picnic – Celebrate Food, Fun, and Nutrition!

Come join us tomorrow for a free Community Picnic on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at 3240 Kerner Blvd, San Rafael!  Enjoy fun activities for the whole family, including cooking demos, free cookbooks, games, and a chance to meet Potter the Otter! You’ll also learn about local food resources and how to build healthy meals using MyPlate. Good nutrition is key to good health. When families have access to healthy, affordable food, they are stronger and more prepared for life’s challenges. But many of these local programs are at risk due to proposed federal budget cuts. Losing funding could mean fewer food resources for families who need them most. Help us celebrate what we have—and learn why it’s worth protecting.
