Marin County COVID-19 Status Update: September 3, 2020
The Marin County COVID-19 Status Update is now publishing five days a week (Monday through Friday) and as needed, in order to share important news and resources in our battle against COVID-19 and to keep our economy running. We remain here for you.
15 Marin Schools Cleared to Open September 8
The Marin County Public Health Officer has approved waiver applications for 15 schools, allowing them to reopen for in-person education for kids in transitional kindergarten (TK) through sixth grade. Eleven other local schools have submitted waiver applications and will be notified next about a possible opening date.
All schools in Marin have been closed to classroom teaching since March when the pandemic’s worldwide effect on public health was growing apparent. Schools that are not authorized to reopen, including TK-6 schools that have not received a waiver, may provide structured, in-person supervision and services to students under the state’s Guidance for Small Cohorts/Groups of Children and Youths.

Medical Service Providers to Provide COVID-19 Testing to Patients
Medical service providers and health care facilities in Marin County must provide COVID-19 coronavirus testing to patients by September 25 to help eliminate the disease’s spread, according to a new order issued September 3 by Marin County Public Health. Dr. Matt Willis, Marin’s Public Health Officer, said the new requirement is being done to increase county-wide testing capacity and ensure timely testing for those who need it the most. The local order strengthens a trend of increasing testing among Marin’s health care providers and follows a series of federal and state requirements for providers to provide testing

Tips for Not Spreading COVID-19 During Labor Day Weekend
Using lessons learned from Memorial Day and Independence Day when social gatherings led to the spread of COVID-19, Bay Area health officials are offering tips to the public on how to stay safe over Labor Day weekend.
Following celebratory events, contact tracing has shown that many people likely became sick with COVID-19 after attending a party or picnic with friends and family. A common theme found by contact tracers was that people attended these gatherings despite showing symptoms of COVID-19, such as coughing. There were also people who attended gatherings who didn’t know they had COVID-19 because they didn’t have any symptoms but who later tested positive and infected others at the gathering.
Health officials discourage social gatherings with people who don’t live in your home because these get-togethers, even small ones, increase the risk of spreading COVID-19. Health officials offer the following tips for a safer celebration:
- Hang out with members of your household
- Outdoors is much safer than indoors
- Wear a cloth face covering
- Stay home if you’re feeling sick
- Communicate beforehand on what protective measures will be in place
- Avoid crowds
- Leave the party or gathering if someone seems sick
- Be extra cautious in the days before gathering with others

During the Labor Day holiday weekend, some of our services will be temporarily unavailable. This includes:

Woodward Fire Update
To date, the Woodward Fire at Point Reyes National Seashore has burned 4626 acres and is and 57% contained. All roads, parking lots, trailheads, trails, facilities, beaches, campgrounds, etc. within Point Reyes National Seashore west of Highway 1 are closed to all visitors until further notice. Reporting Businesses in Violation of Public Health Orders
Those wishing to report a public health order violation by a business can submit their concerns online. Please include as much detail as possible regarding the perceived health order violation. Photos and other documentation welcome, too. Know that state protocols for reopening change frequently, so consult the Marin Recovers Status list for information on business openings and guidelines and the current health order for information on face covering requirements, shelter-in-place and more. Keep in mind that the goal of the order and related enforcement ordinance is to educate and keep our community safe. While violations of the public health order are misdemeanors, issuing citations or making arrests continues to remain a measure of last resort for local law enforcement. It will only be considered after all education and voluntary compliance efforts have failed.
Be a role model and follow the order while encouraging others to do the same. If you see a business out of compliance, you can speak directly to the owner, and offer the link or a copy of the COVID-19 Site-Specific Protection Plan as well as information about the Marin Recovers website. We’re all in this together and we all need to do our part.
