FDA Announces Fall COVID Vaccine Plan

Yesterday, the FDA vaccine advisory panel voted unanimously to recommend a fall COVID-19 vaccine that focuses on the newly dominant XBB strains. Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax will now begin manufacturing millions of doses of the new formulation for fall release. When the timing and the groups who are eligible for the fall vaccine is announced, Marin County vaccine providers will be primed and ready to protect our residents. Stay up to date with vaccines at Vaccine Finder.

Hemp Products Now Mimic Potency of Cannabis

Hemp has traditionally referred to non-intoxicating parts of the cannabis plant. This has changed. Consumers should be aware that many hemp products have been modified to contain high levels of THC. Hemp is not regulated the way cannabis is, and many of these products are legally marketed to youth. Today, Marin County Public Health issued a Public Health Advisory  for Marin clinicians describing a 92 percent rise from 2021 to 2022 in 911 medical calls related to cannabis, THC or marijuana effects for those under age 18 in Marin.

Emerging Variant: XBB. 1.16

Local surveillance has shown that the so called “Arcturus” variant (XBB.1.16) is now the most common strain locally. This emerging strain has been well established in the East Coast for several months and seems to behave similarly to the previously dominant XBB 1.5 strain. The FDA’s fall vaccine recommendation is to focus on XBB strains.
