Public Health Hosts Back-to-School Town Halls
Marin County Public Health kicked off a series of forums for the safe return to school with a Public Health Update for School Leaders yesterday. The online update included input from Dr. Matt Willis and Dr. Lisa Santora to help school superintendents, principals and staff prepare for the start of the 2022-23 school year.
SAVE THE DATE: A second forum, COVID-19 Public Health Update for the School Community, will take place Monday, August 15 at 4:00pm. This forum will be for parents, teachers, staff, administrators, students and community members. The presentation will be recorded. Live Spanish translation will be available.

Wastewater Surveillance isn’t just for COVID-19 Anymore
Marin County Public Health is building on the surveillance systems put in place for monitoring COVID-19 to monitor monkeypox levels in our community. A Stanford University –based initiative, WastewaterSCAN, is helping Marin and other Bay Area counties monitor wastewater for COVID-19, monkeypox, and seasonal viruses like the flu.
People infected with monkeypox are likely to shed the virus in their urine and feces, as well as from lesions and oral secretions. This makes Monkeypox a good candidate for monitoring in wastewater.
If a wastewater sample tests positive, this suggests that there is at least one person infected with the monkeypox virus within the facility catchment area.
Monkeypox viral DNA has been detected by in several sites in the Bay Area and Northern California. Wastewater collection sites sampling for both SARS-CoV-2 and monkeypox viruses in Marin have detected monkeypox in Marin during the same period as our first clinical cases were diagnosed.
WastewaterSCAN began this testing in mid-June and is now providing this same service across the country. Data is available via WastewaterSCAN and publichealth.verily.com. Learn more about WastewaterSCAN.
