Special Edition Status Update: Marin Takes Action to Protect Food Access During Federal Shutdown

With the federal shutdown halting CalFresh (SNAP) benefits for November, Marin County leaders are mobilizing an emergency response to help families keep food on the table. At its November 4 meeting, the Board of Supervisors will consider allocating $800,000 in emergency funding—approximately $200,000 per week—to provide direct food assistance to CalFresh recipients. If approved, funds will be distributed in partnership with the Marin Community Foundation (MCF) and the SF-Marin Food Bank to ensure timely, equitable support for residents.

To strengthen this communitywide effort, the Marin Community Foundation has established the Food on Every Table Fund, seeding it with $500,000 to launch a giving and matching campaign that invites individuals, businesses, and nonprofits to help expand local food access. Marin has a long tradition of coming together to care for one another, and we’re seeing that spirit again as partners, volunteers, and neighbors step up to ensure no one goes hungry.
