MPOX Update

On August 13, the World Health Organization declared Mpox a “public health emergency of international concern.” This was in response to a recent surge in cases driven by a new strain with extension beyond the known endemic regions in Central Africa.  While risk remains low in the United States, it is important to take precautions regarding safe sex, and keep up to date on global patterns in planning travel abroad. Marin County Public Health monitors Mpox levels in local wastewater and will alert the community with any concerning trends.

Shellfish Warning

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has detected a toxin in mussels in Drakes Bay and Dillon Beach and has issued an advisory not to consume any recreationally harvested shellfish in Marin County. CDPH monitors coastal shellfish between May and October for the presence of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxin, a natural biotoxin that can cause temporary paralysis if consumed. Signage has been posted in all Marin recreational shellfish harvesting sites. Commercial shellfish found in restaurants and markets are not included in the advisory and may be safely consumed. Commercial harvesters are certified by CDPH and have strict testing requirements to ensure that all oysters, clams, mussels and scallops entering the marketplace are safe.

Sidewalk CPR

Tomorrow, Saturday, August 17th, is the annual Marin County Sidewalk CPR event. The event is held at multiple locations throughout Marin, between 10 am and 2 pm, and offers the public free training on Hands-Only CPR, how to use an AED, Narcan administration, and how to stop bleeding from injuries. In last year’s event, over 1200 people across Marin were trained in this free, friendly and brief training. Marin County Emergency Medical Services, Marin Public Health, and the Marin Medical Reserve Corps invite everyone to join us at one of the venues listed here to gain these simple life-saving skills.

COVID-19 Update

Local wastewater surveillance reveals that COVID-19 transmission rates remain at a high plateau in Marin County. Hospitalizations are stable at rates lower than the mid July peak.
