Video: New COVID-19 Vaccine On Its Way
Yesterday the FDA approved the updated mRNA COVID vaccines, and they’re headed our way. Dr. Matt Willis, Marin Public Health Officer, explains the updated vaccines, who should get it, and when.
Salmonella and Safe Food Handling
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious intestinal illness. Inadequately refrigerated or improperly cooked foods are a common source of Salmonella infection, especially in the summer. Since May, 24 Salmonella infections among residents have been reported to Marin Public Health. Symptoms usually start six hours to six days after exposure and include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping. Most people recover without treatment, but some develop serious illness. As Labor Day approaches with picnics, grilling, and hot weather, it’s important to remember the CDC's Four Steps to Food Safety.
Helping Smokers Cut Down and Quit
Despite decades of progress and policy protections, smoking remains one of the most preventable causes of premature disease and death. The health benefits of cutting down or quitting begin as soon as tobacco use declines. Marin County Public Health’s Tobacco Prevention Program promotes resources to quit tobacco and nicotine products. The program supports healthcare providers to ensure services are close at hand when patients are ready to cut down and quit. California’s free tobacco quit line, Kick It California, offers phone/app/chat/text support in six languages.
Sidewalk CPR Update
In last Saturday’s Sidewalk CPR event, 1,398 people were trained, and 1,385 free Narcan kits were distributed in 13 sites across Marin County. Residents were trained in hands-only CPR, Narcan administration, AED use, and how to control bleeding in serious injuries. The event was made possible by volunteers in the Marin Medical Reserve Corps, and was organized by Marin County Emergency Medical Services, a branch of Public Health. Empowering individuals to support the health of their community is an important public health goal.
