Dengue Fever in Southern California
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness known as “break-bone fever” that is normally limited to tropical climates. Last week, Los Angeles confirmed a locally acquired dengue case. This is the second consecutive year of local dengue infection in southern California. Climate change is increasing the habitats for mosquitoes that carry tropical disease, including zika, malaria and dengue. There is very low risk to Marin residents outside of travel to dengue-endemic areas.
Tracking Seasonal Respiratory Viruses
Marin County typically sees an annual rise in flu, RSV and COVID in November, with a winter virus season lasting into spring. The precise timing varies year to year. This year’s fall vaccines are now available, and protection begins about 10 days post vaccine. Marin Public Health monitors wastewater levels for all three viruses, and residents are invited to track local transmission rates on the interactive dashboard. Currently, flu and RSV levels are very low, and COVID levels are moderate.
September is Suicide Prevention and Recovery Month
Suicide rates in Marin County are higher than state averages. Preventing suicides requires community wide action and support. September is national Suicide Prevention Month, Key initiatives of the Marin Suicide Prevention Collaborative include the Ask, Listen, Connect campaign and the 988 Hope and Help toolkit. This Tuesday, Marin County Behavioral Health staff presented to the Marin County Board of Supervisors, highlighting the Suicide & Overdose Fatality Review process and the new Data Dashboard.
