Bird Flu

Marin County Public Health continues to monitor the H5N1 bird flu outbreak, with cases confirmed in wild birds and poultry. As of November 12, 2024, H5N1 has been detected in 278 dairies in Central California, and 21 human cases have been reported statewide. The risk to the public remains low, but those in contact with infected animals are at higher risk. Healthcare providers should contact Marin County Public Health for testing, and dairies can report sick livestock at 1-866-922-2473. Public Health recommends that everyone in close contact with livestock get an influenza vaccine today.

Breathing Easy

In addition to staying up to date on vaccines, washing your hands often, covering coughs and masking in crowded indoor settings, you can also reduce the spread of respiratory viruses by improving indoor air quality by:

  • Opening windows and doors when possible.

  • Using fans to bring fresh air inside.

  • Using portable air filters.

Air Pollution and Autism

A new study in Brain Medicine suggests that air pollution may increase the risk of autism in children. Research on this link is difficult because autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has complex features, and pollutants like nitrogen oxides might not directly cause the condition. Also, ASD is often diagnosed years after early development, making it hard to connect pollution to autism. The study shows that exposure to pollution, especially during pregnancy and early childhood, can affect brain development. This highlights the need for better air quality to protect children's health and prevent developmental problems.

Fighting Diabetes

November is National Diabetes Month. The USPTF (United States Preventive Services Task Force) recommends screening in adults who are overweight or obese. Talk to your healthcare provider about whether you should be screened for diabetes today. Our partners at MarinHealth also offer a Diabetes Care Program through the Braden Diabetes Center. And, as we head into the holidays, it is a great time to rethink your drink and choose water. Making changes early can prevent progression to diabetes for those at greatest risk.

Rising Mental Health Struggles and Challenges Among Teens

The 2023 CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which was published last month, shows rising mental health challenges among high school students, with over 40% feeling sad or hopeless. More students are also thinking about suicide. While substance use has dropped, vaping remains a concern. Many students are reporting fights or being bullied. LGBTQ+ students and girls face more mental health struggles and bullying. The survey highlights the need for better support and health programs for teens.

Pets and Emergencies

Pets provide comfort and support, especially in tough times. In disasters, most people won’t leave without their pets, and some may even risk their own safety to rescue animals, even those they don’t know. For instance, last winter, heavy rains in Marin County caused mudslides and flooding, leading to evacuations that involved pets. Some people without a plan for their pets delayed finding shelter for themselves. If you have a pet, it’s crucial to review your evacuation plan and ensure it includes your pet’s needs, such as carriers, food, and medicine.  Visit Marin Humane and Ready Marin for additional disaster preparedness resources for your pets.

Dignity Amidst Adversity

"I Will Not Be Forgotten" is a powerful photography exhibit at the Marin County Civic Center, showcasing 50 images that illuminate the realities of homelessness. The exhibit emphasizes that anyone can face displacement due to unforeseen circumstances. It aims to confront the vulnerability and invisibility often experienced by those without homes, fostering understanding and compassion within the community. Don't miss this poignant exploration of dignity amidst adversity.
