Health Insurers Now Cover COVID-19 Tests

If you’re looking to take a COVID-19 test through your healthcare provider, financial assistance is now available. Beginning January 1, 2022, health insurers in California are required to cover costs related to COVID-19 tests.

The following is what is covered:

  • The COVID-19 test itself
  • Cost sharing for an office or urgent care visit for test administration
  • Provider fees such as copayment, coinsurance, or deductibles

Additionally, health insurers are required to cover the testing fee of any provider, even if it’s out of network without requiring prior authorization.

Over the counter COVID-19 tests

An added boost for COVID-19 testing came on January 15, 2022 when the Biden Administration mandated that health insurers must cover over the counter at-home tests without requiring an order from a healthcare provider.

Federal law now requires health insurers to:

  • Cover up to eight FDA-approved or authorized over the counter at-home tests for each insured person each month.
  • Cover over-the-counter tests without a provider’s order, without any cost sharing requirements (deductibles, co-payments or coinsurance), without prior authorization.
    • Note: Insurers may require you pay up-front and submit a claim for reimbursement)
  • Cover over the counter tests bought from in-network pharmacies and direct shipping
    • Note: If no up-front payment is required, reimbursement is limited to $12 per test. If up-front payment is required, full cost will be reimbursed.

File for a Request for Assistance online for accessing COVID-19 care to get more information as the capacity for testing increases in the state. Consumers should contact their doctor and medical provider for more information.

Don’t have health insurance?

If you are uninsured or have lost healthcare coverage during the pandemic, Covered California offers a Shop and Compare Tool to help find a plan based on your household income, age, and ZIP code. Insurers are also now offering plans during a special new enrollment period. Subsidies may be available if you have experienced a loss of income. Also, free or low-cost coverage through Medi-Cal is available.

Testing Tuesday

Are you a close contact of someone who is COVID positive? Slow the spread by following Isolation and Quarantine guidance and getting a COVID-19 test 5 days after your exposure. Testing is a valuable resource to help limit the spread of the virus in our community and protect the ones you love.

If you’re symptomatic, get tested as soon as possible, even if you’re fully vaccinated.

If you are symptomatic and cannot obtain a test or testing appointment, treat your symptoms as COVID-19 and isolate. If you’ve tested positive with an at-home test, there is no need to confirm the result with a PCR test. Treat a positive as a positive, regardless of the type of test used, and be sure to report your result with our self-test reporting form.

FREE COVID-19 testing is offered in partnership with Optum Serve and Curative. Click the links below to check appointment availability or visit our Testing webpage to find additional testing options.
