Wastewater Surveillance Update: Case Rates on Decline

💩 It's no secret: everyone uses the bathroom. The Bay Area’s wastewater has been a recent topic of conversation as people search for signs that the scourge of the Omicron variant is easing.

Samples recently collected at four sites in Marin County reinforce what our clinical testing has shown: that local COVID-19 infection rates are decreasing. This is good news: just last week, only three of four catchment areas showed signs of a decrease and one area of our community still had elevated levels of COVID-19. This new data confirms Omicron has peaked and is continuing to decline.

Since October 2020, The Berkeley Water Center at University of California, Berkeley has been a partner in monitoring how much SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) is excreted by people in California communities. Individuals infected with COVID-19, including those who are asymptomatic, shed the virus’ genetic material in their feces, so wastewater can provide an accurate signal of how much virus is circulating in the community. This data complements COVID-19 case counts by providing a view of infection trends that isn’t biased by access to testing or under reporting of at-home test results.

Collection data for Marin and 10 other California counties can be viewed at Data.COVID-Web.org.

Vaccination Opportunities in Marin

While more than 91% of our entire population is fully vaccinated, only 68% of eligible residents have received their booster shot. Bolstering our immunity against COVID-19 is of utmost importance, especially with the continued presence of the Omicron variant in our community. Fortunately, we have access to vaccines which are a FREE and effective resource for keeping us protected.

If you know someone who is still in need of a vaccine or booster shot, please share the list below with them! We are grateful to everyone in our community who has done their part by getting fully vaccinated and boosted when eligible.

Upcoming vaccine clinics with open appointments are listed below:

  • Northgate Mall
    San Rafael – February 2, 3, 4 & 5

  • Kerner Clinic
    San Rafael – February 5

  • St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
    Marin City – February 9

Additional vaccine options in our community include:

  • Your medical provider, doctor or family physician
  • Local retail pharmacies

Walk-ups are now available at most vaccine providers across the county. Visit the Vaccine Finder webpage to view available clinics and schedule an appointment. Remember, vaccine recipients between the ages of 5 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to receive a vaccine.

If you are unable to find a vaccination clinic open at a time that works with your schedule, more options for COVID-19 vaccine clinics are available by visiting California Department of Public Health’s MyTurn COVID and flu vaccination scheduling website.
