Vaccination Opportunities in Marin

While more than 87% of our entire population is fully vaccinated (14 days past the final dose of their primary vaccination series), only 68% of eligible residents have received their booster shot. Bolstering our immunity against COVID-19 is of utmost importance, especially with the continued presence of the Omicron variant in our community. Fortunately, we have access to vaccines which are a FREE and effective resource for keeping us protected.

If you know someone who is still in need of a primary vaccination dose or booster shot, please share the list below with them! We are grateful to everyone in our community who has done their part by getting fully vaccinated and boosted when eligible.

Upcoming vaccination clinics with open appointments are listed below:

  • Northgate Mall
    San Rafael – February 9, 10, 11, 12

  • Kerner Clinic (Marin Health and Wellness Campus)
    San Rafael – February 12

  • St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
    Marin City – February 9

Additional vaccination options in our community include:

  • Your medical provider, doctor or family physician
  • Local retail pharmacies

Walk-ups are now available at most vaccination providers across the county. Visit the Vaccine Finder webpage to view available clinics and schedule an appointment. Remember, vaccine recipients between the ages of 5 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to receive a vaccination.

If you are unable to find a vaccination clinic open at a time that works with your schedule, more options for COVID-19 vaccination clinics are available by visiting California Department of Public Health’s MyTurn COVID and flu vaccination scheduling website.

Glossary of COVID-19 Terms

Over the past two years we have been introduced to a wide variety of new terminology. These words were unknown to most of us until we entered the pandemic. As our response to COVID-19 continues, we wanted to offer a refresher of some key vocabulary that has been widely used in the news, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and of course our daily Status Updates. Here is a glossary of some essential COVID-19 terms:

Fully Vaccinated: You are fully vaccinated when it’s been 2 weeks since receiving a second dose of either a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or the single dose of Johnson & Johnson.

Up to Date: You are up to date if you’ve received your booster dose or have recently completed an initial vaccination series. Recently completed an initial series means: It’s been less than 5 months since you’ve received your second dose of either Moderna or Pfizer, or less than 2 months since receiving your single Johnson & Johnson shot.

Third Dose: A third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine is available to recipients of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine series if they are immunocompromised. This dose is identical to the initial two and is meant to offer an extra layer of immune defense. As Johnson & Johnson is a one-dose vaccine, recipients of this manufacturer are not eligible for a third dose. It is recommended to receive a third dose 28 days after completing an initial two dose series.

Additional Dose: An additional dose of a COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for people who are immunocompromised and completed a Pfizer / Moderna series 28 days ago. This term has the same meaning as a third dose.

Booster: A COVID-19 booster dose is administered after someone has finished their vaccine series and the immune protection received from their initial vaccine(s) has weakened over time. Recipients of a booster dose are not immunocompromised, however the extra layer of defense gained from a vaccination series has naturally started to wane and they need to restore their protection.

Close ContactSomeone who is in the presence, less than 6 feet away, of another person who is COVID-19 positive for a cumulative total of at least 15 minutes in a 24-hour time period.

Isolation: When YOU test positive. Isolation separates those who are sick from those who are not.

Quarantine: When you are in close contact with SOMEONE ELSE who has tested positive. Quarantine separates and restricts the movement of those who have been exposed to COVID-19, to see if they become infected.

Antigen test: Antigen tests are designed to detect the presence of a specific viral antigen. In this case, antigen tests identify SARS-CoV-2 when someone is actively infected and sick with COVID-19.

RT-PCR test: This COVID-19 test detects genetic material of the virus by using a lab technique called reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). A fluid sample is collected from either your nostril, the back of your throat, or from your saliva. Most community testing sites in Marin County offer RT-PCR testing obtained via self-administered nasal swabbing.

NAATs: Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs) are a type of viral diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. NAATs detect genetic material (nucleic acids) by amplifying the virus’s genetic material (from a specimen collected from the respiratory tract) in order to detect very small amounts of SARS-CoV-2 RNA.

COVID-19 Data Update:

Below is a summary of today’s data now available on Marin Data & Surveillance webpage. View the page for a broader range of data, plus interactive graphs for confirmed COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths. Data analysis is available by age range, gender, race, and city/town/geographic region. Questions about the data? See our Data FAQ

Looking for daily data trends? Our Marin Data & Surveillance webpage  uses Tableau dashboards to visualize the impact of COVID-19 in Marin County. Under each dashboard are links to datasets available on Marin County's Open Data Portal

Two Notes for February 7 Data Update:

1) COVID-19 Case Data Unavailable:  The State of California’s COVID-19 database, CalREDIE, is experiencing a data reporting delay. Therefore, all dashboards that include COVID-19 case counts were not updated today. Updates should resume Tuesday, February 8.

2) Decrease in number of partially vaccinated residents: In order to more accurately reflect the vaccination status of current Marin residents, individuals who have more recent vaccinations in a county other than Marin have been removed, as of February 7, 2022. This accounts for people who have moved, students studying in other states, etc.
