California’s SMARTER Plan Unveiled

Yesterday, Governor Newsom outlined California’s the next phase of its pandemic response by introducing the SMARTER Plan. This announcement comes as the state continues to see COVID-19 case numbers continuing to drop and the lifting of restrictions like the universal indoor masking mandate. SMARTER, an acronym for the Plan’s fundamental principles, is driven by science and data. It was created to be flexible and evolve, as each new variant represents a different set of challenges. Below is a breakdown of the Plan:

  • Shots: With this new plan, the state will administer 200,000 vaccines per day. Vaccines are our most powerful resource to combat the virus.

  • Masks: The state will maintain a supply of 75 million high quality masks and distribute them where needs arise. Well-fitting masks reduce the spread.

  • Awareness: The state will continue to monitor for new variants, effectively educate the public on the proper measures for staying safe, and support community-based organizations.

  • Readiness: The stresses the importance of keeping the same tools and having them ready if new variants emerge that threaten public health. Wastewater and enhanced respiratory surveillance will continue to serve as essential resources. Thousands of clinical staff will be on call and ready to deploy if needed.

  • Testing: The plan highlights making both PCR and antigen tests more readily available for all populations in the state, while striving for a metric of at least half a million tests performed per day.

  • Education: Keeping schools open for in-person is of upmost importance. A primary goal is a 25% increase of school-based vaccination sites throughout the state.

  • Rx: Through partnerships with the federal government, California will maximize orders for the most effective therapeutics available.
