Marin Voice: Health officers share framework of elements to protect the community

Thursday marks the two-year anniversary of the first Bay Area-wide coronavirus shelter in place. This is an opportunity to take stock of our pandemic response and build on our strengths to meet the challenges ahead.

The most important lesson of the past two years is a simple one. Marin County is among the most highly vaccinated communities in the nation. At the same time, we consistently experience some of the lowest COVID-19 case counts, hospitalizations and deaths of any county. This simple equation — high vaccination rates and low relative COVID-19 community burden — may be the most important lesson we have to offer.

High vaccination rates are a marker of deeper strengths in our community and point to a commitment to science and a recognition of our dependency on one another for our well-being.

In order to strengthen these values publicly, Marin County Public Health has developed a framework to guide our ongoing response as we face an uncertain future. The framework has three core elements: layered strategies, a balanced response and community responsibility.

Think Positive, Test Negative

Testing is an essential tool we have available to help combat the spread of COVID-19 in our community. If you are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19, don’t hesitate and get tested as soon as possible. This is strongly recommended even if you’re up to date on your vaccinations. It’s an easy step to take, and by finding out if you’re positive, you help others test negative.

Alternatively, are you a close contact of someone who is COVID positive? Slow the spread by following Isolation and Quarantine guidance and getting a COVID-19 test 5 days after your exposure. Protect the ones you love by taking advantage of the testing options available in Marin County.

FREE COVID-19 testing is offered in partnership with Optum Serve and Curative. Click the links below to check appointment availability or visit our Testing webpage to find additional testing options.

COVID-19 Data Update:

As of February 16, our COVID-19 Status Update changed in frequency and is now published Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays except holidays. Because these updates are no longer published on consecutive days, the last column in each data table now reflects the change from last Status Update, not a change from the previous day.

Below is just a snapshot of local COVID-19 data. For a more in-depth analysis of COVID-19 trends, please view the Marin Data & Surveillance webpage, review our Data FAQ, or explore the raw data sets on Marin County's Open Data Portal

(This accounts for individuals who have moved, students who are studying outside the county, etc.) Instead of a cumulative number, this data point has been updated to reflect the percentage of Marin residents aged 5+ to keep this number more consistent in spite of ongoing data corrections.
