What is the Delta Variant?

Delta is currently the predominant strain of the virus in Marin and the United States. Below is a high-level summary of what CDC scientists have recently learned about the Delta variant:

  • The Delta variant is more contagious. It has shown to be at least twice as contagious as previous variants.
  • Delta may cause more severe illness in unvaccinated individuals. In two recent studies, in Scotland and Canada, those infected with the Delta variant strain of COVID-19 were more likely to be hospitalized than those infected with previous strains.
  • Unvaccinated individuals remain the greatest concern. The greatest risk of transmission is among unvaccinated people who are much more likely to contract, and therefore transmit the virus.
  • Fully vaccinated individuals can transmit the Delta variant to others, however vaccinated people appear to be infectious for a shorter period of time.

For more information, please visit the  CDC: Delta Variant webpage.
