Get to Know the CDC’s Community Transmission Dashboard
You may have heard in the news that California was one of the few states in the U.S. to move out of the CDC’s “high” transmission category. What does that mean?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tracks how much COVID-19 is spreading as well as how likely people are to be exposed to it with a measurement known as the “level of community transmission.” This is tracked at both the state and county level. There are two numbers that determine the level of community transmission:
- Total new cases refer to a county’s rate of new COVID-19 infections, reported over the past 7 days, per every 100,000 residents.
- Percent positivity refers to the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests in a county over the past 7 days. This number is based on reports from states on a specific type of test known as a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) and does not include rapid antigen tests.
The CDC tracks community transmission rates in four categories: Blue (Low Transmission); Yellow (Moderate Transmission); Orange (Substantial Transmission); and Red (High Transmission). A higher number of total new cases and a higher percent positivity correspond with a higher level of community transmission.
While the color coding and names feel similar to the former Blueprint for a Safer Economy, the classification of each category is different. However, in the absence of the Blueprint, this new tool can be helpful in helping us measure meaningful progress in minimizing COVID-19 spread and infection in our communities. Also, unlike the Blueprint, CDC updates its data several times per week.
Currently, Marin County is in the Orange (Substantial Transmission) category. For Marin to move to Yellow (Moderate Transmission), we must lower our current case rate to 18 or fewer total new cases per day.
You can use the COVID-19 County Check Tool for a snapshot of your county’s level of community transmission over the past 7 days.
