New Dashboard Tracks Vaccine’s Impact

We are excited to announce a new dashboard on our COVID-19 vaccination data page. There have been requests from our community for a resource to compare the risk of infection, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19 between those who are vaccinated and unvaccinated. Thanks to epidemiologists with Marin County Public Health, access to such information has become available.

Our new data dashboard provides users with a visual tool to measure the effectiveness of vaccines. Users can toggle between time periods of either the past 90 days or since the beginning of the year. Its three columns display data for Marin County cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. The data displays the risk level plus the totals of each category per 100,000 residents for both vaccinated and unvaccinated.

Exploring this dashboard allows viewers to gain a better understanding of the risks of COVID-19 and see how important vaccines are for lowering the risk of infection, severe illness that requires hospitalization, and death. In sum, the data shows that risks are far higher for people who are unvaccinated than those who are fully vaccinated.

Booster Update: Moderna, Johnson & Johnson One Step Closer to Becoming Available

Marin County Public Health’s goal of providing boosters to at least 50% of all Marin residents over the age of 65 just got a boost of its own today, as the FDA took the first in a multi-step process of making more COVID-19 vaccine brands available as boosters.

For any vaccine to be authorized for local use, it must be reviewed and approved by two federal and one state regulatory agency. In addition to the FDA, vaccines must receive approval from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), followed by the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup (WSSSRW).

As part of the first step of authorization, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) amended the emergency use authorizations (EUA) to allow certain groups of people to receive Moderna and Johnson & Johnson booster vaccines:

Moderna Booster

A Moderna booster shot is recommended for people who received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine series at least 6 months ago, and are:

Age 65 & Older
Age 18 & older who have underlying medical conditions
Age 18 & older who live or work in high-risk settings

Johnson & Johnson Booster

A Johnson & Johnson booster shot is recommended for people who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months ago, and are age 18 & older.

In addition, the FDA also proposed the use of the vaccines as a “mix and match” option, meaning your booster dose could be a different brand than your original vaccine series. Eligibility would be based on the brand of your original vaccine series:

If you originally received Johnson & Johnson, you may receive a Pfizer, Moderna (half dose), or Johnson & Johnson booster vaccine two months after your original dose.
If you originally received Moderna or Pfizer and you meet the eligibility (age 65 & older; age 18 & older with underlying medical conditions; OR age 18 & older and live/work in a high-risk setting), you may receive a Pfizer, Moderna (half dose) or Johnson & Johnson booster vaccine six months after completing your original vaccine series.

ACIP is scheduled to review potential authorization tomorrow, October 21. WSSSRW is tentatively scheduled to meet as soon as ACIP issues a decision about booster use. Visit our boosters webpage for updates on when Moderna and Johnson & Johnson boosters may be available in Marin.

Beyond the COVID-19 Numbers

Throughout the duration of the pandemic, the public has been given large quantities of figures and data. Whether it’s regarding vaccination rates or case counts, we encounter new information on a daily basis. Here are some interesting numbers surrounding COVID-19 and vaccinations that deserve attention: 13, 10, 1, 81, 15.

13: Marin County is 13 days away from meeting one of the criteria for lifting its local indoor masking requirement and defaulting back to the State’s mask guidelines. We have been in the “yellow” or moderate transmission tier for 8 days. We are currently meeting the other metrics needed to lift the local order: (a) decreased hospitalizations with a weekly count at or under 15 per day; and (b) 80% of our total population is fully vaccinated. 10: There are 10 variants presently classified as Variants Being Monitored (VBM) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

1: Delta is currently the only Variant of Concern (VOC) by the CDC.

81: 81% of Marin’s total population is now fully vaccinated. Our vaccine data page (or the table below) expands on this. We appreciate everyone who has contributed to this remarkable figure.

15: Based on data collected since July 20, 2021 (90 days ago), unvaccinated people have been 15 times more likely to be infected with COVID-19 compared to those who are vaccinated. This is according to our new vaccination data dashboard.
