CDC Gives Official Recommendation for Pediatric Vaccines
US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Rochelle Walensky has formally recommended the Pfizer BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine for children 5 to 11 years old. This endorsement comes after the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the CDC cast a pivotal vote earlier this afternoon, unanimously recommending the Pfizer vaccine for pediatrics. The authroization from the CDC expands the eligibility for a COVID-19 vaccine to an additional 28 million Americans.
What’s next for Marin County?
The process of vaccine implementation in California in was highlighted in a Status Update last week. With the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authorization of the vaccine for emergency use in younger children on October 29 and the CDC’s recommendation today, the final step of the process for California’s pediatric vaccine availability is in the hands of Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup (WSSSRW). They must review then give their final recommendation before pediatric vaccinations begin in the state and in our county.
We will provide additional updates on the process of pediatric vaccine authorization once more information becomes available.
Marin Moves into Orange Status; Hospitalizations At Zero
Today, Marin County moved into the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s orange “substantial” category of transmission. In fact, the entire Bay Area returned to either “substantial” or red “high” categories. This comes after Marin County achieved 25 consecutive days in the yellow “moderate” category.
Does this mean Marin County is going to issue a new health order in response to this change? No. As Dr. Willis said in a recent video message, you must look that the bigger picture: other indicators remain in great shape. While our local case rates have increased slightly, our hospitalization rates have continued to decline. In fact, today is the first day we’ve had zero COVID-19 hospitalizations in several months.
Vaccines are proving their effectiveness. Even those few cases who are vaccinated but contract COVID-19 find they have mild to no symptoms and are protected from hospitalization and death. Continuing to encourage unvaccinated friends and neighbors to consider the vaccine and wearing face coverings in higher-risk indoor environments will continue to help Marin make progress in as we move into the next phase of pandemic recovery.
