The Marin County COVID-19 Status Update is published weekdays and as needed to share important news and resources related to the COVID-19 pandemic and to keep the local economy running. We remain here for you.

First Responder “Verify or Test” Requirement Extended to March 1

The start date of a health order to verify the “boosted” status of Marin County first responders was extended to March 1. The order applies to Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Temporary Disaster Shelter employees.  Any employee that is unable to provide proof of being boosted by March 1 will be required to undergo weekly surveillance testing.

High demand for the vaccine over the past few months has made scheduling a booster appointment difficult. Considering that challenge, the extension of the effective date will permit those who have been previously unable to schedule an appointment the time needed to comply with the order.  Walk-in availability is now available at most vaccination clinics.

Visit the health orders webpage for more details or Vaccine Finder to locate a nearby vaccination clinic.

Marin County Continues to Prioritize Equity Goals

While Marin County is one of the most highly vaccinated counties in the United States, Marin County Public Health continues to focus on vaccine equity and ensuring all residents who are eligible to be vaccinated and boosted have access.

Boosters have proven effective at reducing the severity of COVID-19 infection and the hope is that everyone who is eligible for a booster shot will choose to be vaccinated. Thus far in the booster rollout, 68% of all Marin County residents who are eligible for boosters are boosted (eligibility is based on having completed a Pfizer or Modern primary series 5 or more months ago, or a Johnson & Johnson primary series 2 or more months ago).  Among the LatinX community, this number is only 44%.

In general, the LatinX population is younger than Marin County’s overall population, and booster coverage is higher in older populations.  For example, 85% of all Marin County vaccine eligible residents age 65 & older are boosted, and 72% of eligible older adult residents who identify as LatinX are boosted.  Whereas 63% of all Marin County vaccine eligible residents ages 12 to 64 are boosted, but only 42% of eligible LatinX residents age 12 to 64 are boosted.

Marin County Public Health maintains ongoing partnerships with local community-based organizations to help bring vaccines to various neighborhoods in Marin County, including efforts to connect with communities of color, low-income households, and other groups with barriers to access. This includes neighborhood pop-up clinics.  Several clinics are planned for February and will be posted to GetVaccinatedMarin.org as details are confirmed.

California Launches Additional Feature on App

If you’ve recently found out that you are COVID-19 positive, there is an option to easily ensure that close contacts become aware of your test result, even if you test at home. The state of California has an app called CA Notify and its purpose is to quickly alert people if they were a close contact of someone who is positive.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a close contact is someone who was less than 6 feet away from an infected person for a at least 15 minutes during a 24-hour period. The sooner people know that may have been exposed to COVID-19, the faster they can get tested and quarantine. This is important for reducing the spread of the virus in our community.

The CA Notify app is free and easy to use. Personal information is not collected, nor does it use GPS, so it doesn’t track your location and keeps your identity safe. Once you sign up, activate CA Notify on your phone and you’re all set. You will be notified if you are a close contact with another CA Notify user who tests positive for COVID-19. Please note: You must keep your Bluetooth turned on in order to receive alerts.

Visit CA Notify to learn more, including where to download the app.
