State Indicates Future Changes for Mask Guidance; Still Awaiting Final Updates for Schools

Today, Governor Gavin Newsom, along with the governors of Oregon and Washington, announced the intention to further loosen the State’s mask guidance on March 12. The future changes would not overrule the federal requirement to wear masks on public transit, but it would impact face covering restrictions in school and childcare environments. In sum, the Governors are suggesting guidance move from “required” to “recommended.”

California Department of Public Health is continuing to update its guidance for face coverings in schools and other school-based mitigation strategies based on the new CDC framework announced last week. Marin County Public Health has been in alignment with the state’s framework and is waiting to understand the state’s updated school guidance before confirming what changes – if any –will take place in local classrooms. At that point, Marin schools and districts would have the ability to maintain a stricter stance that whatever new policy the state unveils.

Our schools webpage will be updated with new protocols as soon as CDPH’s new guidance is known.

Vaccination Opportunities in Marin

While Marin County remains one of the most highly vaccinated within the state and the nation, many eligible residents have yet to receive their booster shot. Bolstering our immunity against COVID-19 is of utmost importance, especially with the continued presence of the Omicron variant in our community. Fortunately, we have access to vaccines which are a FREE and effective resource for keeping us protected.

If you know someone who is still in need of a primary vaccination dose or booster shot, please share the list below with them! We are grateful to everyone in our community who has done their part by getting fully vaccinated and boosted when eligible.

Upcoming vaccination clinics with open appointments:

  • Northgate Mall
    San Rafael – March 2, 3, 4, 5

  • Tamalpais High School
    Mill Valley – March 1

  • Margaret Todd Senior Center
    Novato – March 2

  • Kerner Clinic (Marin Health and Wellness Campus)
    San Rafael – March 5

Additional vaccination options in our community:

  • Your medical provider, doctor or family physician
  • Local retail pharmacies

Walk-ups are now available at most vaccination providers across the county. Visit the Vaccine Finder webpage to view available clinics and schedule an appointment. Remember, vaccine recipients between the ages of 5 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to receive a vaccination.

If you are unable to find a COVID-19 vaccination clinic open at a time that works with your schedule, more options are available by visiting California Department of Public Health’s MyTurn COVID and flu vaccination scheduling website.

Glossary of COVID-19 Terms Volume 2

Since the pandemic response began, we’ve all become aware of a plethora of different terminology. Some of the messaging we’ve heard or read in the news may have been familiar while other lingo perhaps seemed like a foreign language. To serve as a point of reference, we shared a collection of key COVID-19 related words in a previous Status Update. Here is a second list to add to our glossary of essential terms.

Incubation period: The time from exposure to infection and when symptoms develop.

Immunocompromised: An individual with a weakened immune system is considered immunocompromised and more susceptible to COVID-19 infection. Some examples are people who are receiving cancer treatment, those who suffer from chronic diseases like HIV/AIDS, or people who have received an organ transplant and are taking medicine that affects the immune system.

R number: Pronounced “R naught,” this is also referred to as the reproduction (R0) number of a virus. This is an indicator of the level of a virus's ability to be passed on from one person to another. The number represents how many people a sick person could infect if they were to be in close contact with each other.

Viral shedding: The release or discharge of particles of a virus from an infected individual. It happens once the virus has multiplied in the body. This occurs while eating, speaking, and in other routine activities throughout the day.

Immune evasion: This occurs when a virus can escape detection by the antibodies created from receiving a vaccine or previous infection.

Morbidity rate: The severity of a disease in a certain population. The morbidity rate of COVID-19 is different in each community depending on factors like vaccination rate and age demographics.

NEW: As of February 16, our COVID-19 Status Update has changed in frequency and is now published Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays except holidays. Below is just a snapshot of local COVID-19 data. For a more in-depth analysis of COVID-19 trends, please view the Marin Data & Surveillance webpage, review our Data FAQ, or explore the raw data sets on Marin County's Open Data Portal
